I Pencil: My Family Tree as Told to Leonard E. Read

The link below will take you to perhaps the simplest, best explanation of the interconnected, intertwined functioning of a free market.  It is a simple tale of a #2 lead pencil who tells his story to Leonard E Read.  Read goes on to explain all the constituent parts of a lead pencil and how, absent centralized control, cooperating humans bring it all together, from all over the globe, to make a simple #2 lead pencil.

Leonard E Read (1898-1983) was an indefatigable pamphleteer for freedom who founded an organization called the Foundation for Economic Education in New York in the aftermath of WWII.  He was practically alone in the wilderness in arguing for a free market in a world that had seemingly gone mad for state control.  His essay I Pencil was his most famous written work in that effort.  It was originally written in 1958, and still stands up as a paragon of clear argumentation and insight.  There is also a 6-minute video as well. Enjoy!
