What Are We Doing Here?

The purpose of this site is to give full expression of my faith in Jesus Christ as Risen Lord and Savior.  Since I have been given the gift of faith in God and His son, Jesus the Christ I feel compelled to respond with gratitude.  All of us should seek to do good works, not in order to gain salvation, but because we have been given salvation as a free gift.

Therefore, as with all God’s children, I will seek to, as feebly, as I can, to do what I can in furtherance of God’s Kingdom.  To that end I focus on two areas of concern: peace and stewardship.

The focus on peace is critical.  All that God desires for His children is wrapped up in furthering peace and ending violence among and between humanity.  This is of primary concern.  All that we could ever hope to accomplish in God’s world depends upon nonviolence.  The command to love God and love your neighbor, as well as the New Commandment given at the Last Supper to love one another the way that God loves us puts this effort front and center.  In a world of war and under the constant threat of nuclear destruction the only battle worth waging is the battle for peace.

The second area of focus is stewardship.  This is simply because I have an extensive background in financial services and retirement planning.  I know the intricacies of this world; I understand the pitfalls and traps and I can identify the opportunities.  I, by virtue of my past, can help people succeed in this area, and it is my firm conviction that God wants us to use all our human experience to further His mission.

To further both goals, this site has been constructed to connect you with resources to explore your faith in a practical way, to think about what God wants for His children and to get involved and increase your impact.

May all of us seek, not our will but His!  Praise Be to God!

The McGovern Moment and Its Close

What is the “McGovern Moment”? The “McGovern Moment is a term I use to describe an all too brief historical period.  It refers to the 1972 capture of the Democratic nomination, and much of the Democratic Party apparatus by George McGovern, then a Senator from South Dakota.  It was in …

Faith Enough to Obey

Uncomfortable Imagery The text this week is Luke 17:5-10.  This presents two short parables that are both somewhat uncomfortable.  The first has Jesus, in response to the disciples request for more faith, telling them that if they had the faith of a mustard seed you could uproot trees.  Second, Jesus …

What Comes After Faith

A Tale of Two Lives The text this week is Luke 16:19-31.  This is the uncomfortable story of the rich man and Lazarus.  The rich man had everything, and Lazarus had nothing.  It’s not that the rich man could not have known about Lazarus, the poor man was barely existing …

The Utopian Anti-Work Culture

The Godliness of Work Two weeks ago, on Labor Day I published a piece about the anti-labor lobby.  It focused on the various policies that the ostensibly “pro-labor” lobby advocated.  This week I wish to go beyond the policies and dive into a bit of the culture that drives those …

Repentance is Yours Sayeth the Lord

A Timeless Lesson The text this week is Luke 16:1-13.  This is the story of the dishonest manager and one of my most treasured passages in Scripture.  This is primarily a story of repentance, perhaps the story of repentance.  In this story it is made clear that the manager was …
